The plan was to meet at the Bell lake parking lot at 7:30 in the morning so that we could get going early. Since its so late in the season we figured that it'd be dark before we got back, so we brought flash lights figuring on finishing the last part of the hike in the dark. Well, I ended up being a half hour late and thought Kevin had left without me, so I headed off into the forest on my own. It was a bit of an adventure because there are no marked for the first few kilometres. Normally the best plan is to canoe to the beginning of the trail, but we were going to bush wack out way in. I set out at around 8:15 figuring that they had left without me, and with my topo map figured I'd be able to find my way through the bush to the trail.

I remembered Kevin saying something about a trail, so I thought I'd try to find it. This turned out to be a mistake, because I did find some markings, but kept loosing them, and eventually had to give up on that idea. Since it was raining and I didn't have a compas my only hope was to find the shore and follow it until I hit some landmark. I wasn't too keen on the idea of getting lost in the hundreds of acres of forest even though I had some emergency provisions. When I did find the shore I thought I was facing south, so went west. It turned out that I was going the right direction, but was about a kilometre east of where I thought I was. No worries because after wading trough a creek I found a small portage and knew exactly where I was. This was around 9:30. Now that I knew where I wa I followed the shore until the beginning of the hiking path about 1.5km away. It was raining quite heavily now, and I was fully soaked. I hit the base of the path at 10:00, and seeing that sign for silver peak was a great relief. This trail was quite wide, so I got out my umbrella and took of my soaked rain jacket. I still thought that Kevin's group was ahead of me, but in case they were behind I wrote me initials in the leaves on the path.

Anyway, the rest of the trip was pretty straight forward. I got to the peak around 11:30, had some lunch, took some pictures and headed down at 12. The peak was in a cloud at the time, so I couldn't really see much more than 20 feet, and it was really windy.

Around 12:45 I met up with Kevin's group, and went back with them to the peak. By the time we got there things had cleared up a bit, allowing us to see some of the lakes below, but not enough to see Sudbury. We left the peak around 2, and made it back to the parking lot around 5:45. We used an old logging road from the end of the proper hiking trail. Trees have been planted all along it to make it unusable as a road, but you can still follow it back to the parking lot.

The rest of the pictures are here

<! last modified code stuff*> <! end of last modified java*>
This page is maintained by PaulGraham, paul(at)paulgraham(dot)ca
