Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka
Here are some pictures of a model I just finished painting (May 29th 2001).  Its a minnature made by Games Workshop and is of the infamous Ork hero Ghazghkull Thraka.  Click on the tumbnails to see a larger image.  The Note that the model is about 70mm tall (including the skull on the pole).

Painting techniques varied in order to achieve the different surface finishes.  The metal parts were drybrushed and touched up after.  Almost everything else was done using a technique called feathering.  Feathering is basically painting on the highlights using thinned down paint.  For example the green flesh was achieved by first painting it a dark green, then painting on the raised portions with watered down yellow.

Some new things that I tried were the paint chips and the rusty metal.

The paint chips were painted on after everything else was done to the desired area.  A light grey was painted in a jagged blob pattern that would define the outside of the chip.  Then a black/silver mix was painted within the grey region leaving an outline.  Finally if the chip was on an edge straight silver was applied as a highlight, or on a flat surface some chestnut ink was used for rust.

The rust was was done by blotting chestnut ink on finished parts in a random pattern.  This was repeated until a semi-uniform rusty area was achieved (about 2 or 3 layers).

For the base I used a texture gel that has a resin sand mixed into it.  I got it at an art store, and was extreemly pleased with it.  The grass is from woodland scenics, a model train scenery  maker.  I also added some small rocks from woodland scenics.

I used a gloss clear coat to protect the paint... I would have rather used a matte finish, however I didn't have any at the time.

Anyway, I'm pretty proud of the way this one turned out.  If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me (link at bottom of page).
