04/11/2008: "Day 15"

Today's big news has to be that Kate is back to drinking tea. The past two weeks are probably the longest stretch Kate has ever gone without tea, so she was quite happy to have a small taste, even if it was through a straw. She's allowed to sip liquids now, so of course she is requesting tea.

In addition to the tea, I'd say that the day went quite well. We started with physio having Kate sit up in bed again and support herself for a little while. In the afternoon we had another CATscan of her brain and an electro cardiogram of her heart. The CATscan showed us how much improvement there has been with the damage, but that there is still some healing that needs to be done. I'm no expert, but from what I was shown and how it was explained to me the progress is quite remarkable.

The electro cardiogram was to check to see if there is any infection in the valves around the heart. She is still fighting some infections, so they needed to make sure it wasn't going to affect her heart. The initial results are that there was nothing obvious, so that's encouraging. They seem to be taking her infections quite seriously and have her on the strongest antibiotics available. She has had a mild fever and elevated white blood cell count, but those seem to be coming down. Please pray that those stay down and the infection goes away.

We are also happy with Kate's cognitive improvements. She is improving every day, and the connections seem to be coming back together. She's getting some details mixed up, and can get worked up easily. It was easier to calm her today, and she was able to stay focused longer. Please pray that we continue to see these types of improvements until she is back to 100%.

Sorry for posting this so late, but from now on I expect to be posting later in the evening after I leave the hospital.

Hi Paul & Kate,

Sam and Robert were asking me today as soon as I got home from work if there was any news on Kate. We are all so relieved to read your postings these past two days and can hear the relief in your tone now that Kate has been extubated and can talk - even if it is a whisper.

I'm sure that your site has been a real source of comfort for all the family to read - not only those of us who are waiting to hear an update, but for Kate's and your immediate family as you've been waiting and watching Kate recover. The messages of love and concern by so many just goes to show what a special girl she really is!

I've been reading your posts and comments to Nana Goodwin over the phone this week as she too has been asking after you all. She sends her love to all the family, and is anxious that Kate be well again soon.

Take care,
Sending lots of love,
Carolyn, Robert, Sam and Yvonne

Hi Kate and Paul,

Thanks for sharing the great news... it just keeps getting better and better! All of the staff at Joshua Creek are sending their best wishes. You are in our thoughts and prayers every day.

While Kate is enjoying a cup of tea sometime, please remind her about her special class of "Wonderful Ones" at Joshua Creek! I think that will bring a smile to her face :)

Love and gentle hugs,
Sandi Corrigan

Kate and Paul....
Hearing how things have been improving day by day are so encouraging! I know that God has Kate in the palm of His mighty hand. As someone in the healthcare field I am praying that her recovery will baffle even the most experienced clinician and that all they can attribute it to is God's Hand. Kate is one of the strongest people that I know and she has left an impressive mark on my life (I dedicate every time I make chocolate dipped fruit to her, little Mrs. Martha Stewart!) And I know that she is strong enough to press through this. the road may be long, but before you know it Kate will be back 100% stronger than ever. God is FAITHFUL!
Love and Prayers,
Becky

I'm so happy to hear that Kate continues to improve. We pray every night as a family for her (and for the rest of the family).

We'll continue to lift her up in the weeks ahead, that she'll make a full recovery.

We serve an amazing God, who hears our prayers.

This is awesome news!!

Our pastor has been preaching from Phillipians lately, and I was reading from it last night. This verse (1:18, 19) jumped out at me:

"...I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance."

God be glorified for delivering Kate from that horrible night, and may He be glorified in her fantastic recovery!!

Beck and I will keep on praying for you guys, and for 110% recovery!

Paul,
We are friends of the Dias family and have been standing with all of you during this "bend in the road". We are so encouraged to hear of the miracles that you are seeing daily and we continue to pray that the Lord would complete the work He's started. He IS the author and the FINISHER! We're also praying for you, and all family members involved, that your faith would be strengthened and your physical stamina would be increased to meet the demands of this season of life. Kate is loved dearly and we are grateful for the updates you post daily so we can be more focused in our prayers and praise.
